The first-person narrative voice is detached and almost lethargic. This is not an enjoyable read in the sense of “fun”. I think this detracted from my enjoyment of the book and my ability to care about the characters.Īnd that brings me to my next point. But when the film adaptation came out a couple of years ago, I read quite a lot about it, and so knew what to expect. I think there are several things about the characters’ situation which are supposed to be shocks/reveals. I can see why so many book clubs choose this! The writing is excellent, the characters are interesting and you find yourself thinking about the issues it explores long after you finish reading. My take: I would give this book 4/5 stars rather than 5. I will say that, in my opinion, this is not a science fiction or dystopian novel, whatever you might hear or however you see it classified. If you do want to read the blurb, I’ve put it down at the end of this review. What it’s about: I seem to be saying this a lot lately… but I honestly think your experience of this book will be improved if you come to it with no idea what it’s about. A thought-provoking rather than an enjoyable read which it would be better to come to knowing nothing about. A haunting tale told by a mesmeric voice.

This explains both the appearance of extraordinary phenomena on Earth and the lack of understanding of magic and acceptance of the extraordinary as commonplace (as it is in the other four worlds). However, Earth became separated from the other four worlds long ago. Overseeing all of the dominions is the Unbeheld, Hapexamendios (God). The Earth is actually just one part of five connected worlds or Dominions, called the Imajica. Barker has stated he wrote the novel in fourteen months writing fourteen to sixteen hours a day, seven days a week. The inspiration and many of the ideas for Imajica came to Clive Barker in dreams, and so inspired, he worked at an intense pace to complete the novel. Considered wide in scope, elaborate in its imagery, and meticulous in its detail, the novel covers themes such as God, sex, love, gender and death. The work, 824 pages at its first printing in 1991, chronicles the events surrounding the reconciliation of Earth, called the Fifth Dominion, with the other four Dominions, parallel worlds unknown to all but a select few of Earth's inhabitants. Barker, in 1997, named it as his favourite of all his writings up to that point. Imajica is a fantasy novel by British author Clive Barker. It’s hard to stay motivated and work hard towards average goals. So we learn to limit our desires to what is “realistic.” Cardone says this is a huge mistake because… We are told that it’s not good or somehow immoral to become very successful. In our society, we’re often taught to make our goals smaller and more achievable to avoid disappointment. Massive thoughts must be followed by massive actions. This is the focus of the 10x Rule: You must set targets that are 10 times what you think you want and then do 10 times what you think it will take to accomplish those targets. That’s why he now teaches his students “The 10X Rule”: In fact, his biggest regret in life is not setting much larger goals from the very beginning. He says this may be the biggest reason he became rich. Grant Cardone writes down his goals every single day. Whereas I was hesitant and often disengaged, Lolly was passionate and headstrong. After years of being in relationships yet feeling emotionally alone, I had finally met a person who felt right because she was so different from me. I still felt like there was something essential in my being that was lost or missing or had never been there in the first place. I didn’t believe that I was in any way unique in my general feelings and experiences. “You’re burnt out,” my partner, Lolly, offered. As I ate my breakfast, I pored through the pages of another psychologist’s book, my version of a “beach read.” The topic? Emotionally unavailable mothers.Īs I read it-for professional enrichment, or so I believed-the words activated an unexpected, and confusing, emotional response. I was in upstate New York with my partner, Lolly, on what was supposed to be a vacation, a retreat from the stress of city life in Philadelphia. The Dionne Quintuplets became a more popular attraction than Niagara Falls, ogled through one-way screens by sightseers as they splashed in their wading pool at the center of a tourist hotspot known as Quintland. In an effort to protect them from hucksters and showmen, the Ontario government took custody of the five identical babies, sequestering them in a private, custom-built hospital across the road from their family-and then, in a stunning act of hypocrisy, proceeded to exploit them for the next nine years. Overnight, Yvonne, Annette, Cécile, Émilie, and Marie Dionne mesmerized the globe, defying medical history with every breath they took.
